Afghan policemen escort Afghan journalist Sayed Parwiz Kambakhsh (C) as he arrives at a Kabul court on May 25, 2008. Kambakhsh appeared for the second time in a court hearing and asked the judge to give him another week to present his defence statement through a defence lawyer. Kambakhsh, 23, during his first hearing last week admitted to the court to downloading from the Internet an article questioning tenets of Islam but denied the allegation that he had distributed it among fellow students at Balkh University in the north. The 23-year-old also rejected suggestions that he had insulted his faith, telling the court: “I’m a Muslim and will never allow myself to insult my religion.” A primary court in Balkh province sentenced Kambakhsh to death at a closed-door hearing in January that he said lasted three minutes.
